Directly off the coast of Abelnes lie the Stolsfjorden with its deep, calm pools and the Strandsfjorden, prized for its striking cliffs and plateaus. Here, depending on the season, you can find pollock, cod, saithe, ling, flatfish, mackerel, and sea trout.
Other top spots in the region: Eidsfjord & Fedafjord – protected fjord arms with many species, Siragrunnen – extensive marine area and legendary for strong catches, Vollesfjord – reliable, structurally diverse and always worth a try, Flekkefjord – particularly popular for sea trout along the shoreline, Hidra Island – one of the most varied and successful fishing areas in southern Norway, Listafjorden – open, species-rich, with diverse depths and bottom types

Why Abelnes is so popular

Many fishing spots are so close that you can often visit several locations in a single day. Abelnes is a place for guests who want to experience nature, for anglers who love large fishing areas, and for everyone who wants to enjoy authentic Norway. Clear, calm, powerful – a place that has attracted many guests year after year.

Flekkefjord – the white pearl with charm and many experiences
Flekkefjord is a friendly and lively coastal town with light-colored wooden architecture, well-kept streets, and a harbor that's right in the heart of the action. It's easily accessible from Abelnes – ideal if you want to spend a day away from your fishing rods.

What awaits you in Flekkefjord:

Freizeit und Angeln

Sea and fjord fishing near Flekkefjord, from Abelnes to Hidra.

From your base in the Flekkefjord and Abelnes region, you have excellent opportunities for sea trout and saltwater fishing, depending on the tides and the season.

The saltwater fish in this region are very diverse. The calm fjord locations offer many advantages, especially for anglers, diving groups, and families with children who enjoy fishing, providing access to the best fishing grounds. With our comfortable boat, you can easily reach some of the most famous fishing spots in Southern Norway.

These include Flekkefjord, the Bubble Bay near Fjellsa (reachable in just 10-15 minutes), as well as Vollesfjord and Strandsfjord near Andabeløy, Eidsfjord, Stolsfjord, Hidrasund, and Fedafjord.

The wreck of the Gudrun, which sank off the harbor in Abelnes during World War II, is a popular destination for divers from all over the world in spring, summer, and autumn. The shores off Grönnes in Flekkefjord offer excellent opportunities for sea trout and sea bass fishing. Other saltwater fish can also be caught from shore, depending on the tide. If you are interested in salmon or trout fishing, we recommend visiting the large freshwater lakes in the area, as well as the rivers in Ana Sira or Kvinensdal (please note the closed seasons and the requirement for day permits).

In good weather, you can even explore the south coast of Hidras, the Lista Plateau, and the Siragrunnen. Insider tips include the mussel cove in Vollesfjord and the so-called "Retirees' Cove" very close to the house in Stolsfjorden.

The Siragrunnen and the fish-rich Lista Plateau (also known as the "football field" due to its vast, sandy, approximately 40-60 meter deep plateau) can be reached by boat in good weather. However, these trips require careful nautical planning and consistently good weather throughout the day.

Keep in mind that you can also fish in the open sea in the Abelnes region, which is one of the best fishing grounds in Southern Norway, boasting an impressive variety of fish species and astonishing sizes. Therefore, it is essential to plan and consider your excursions carefully. Check the wind and wave height several times a day on the usual weather websites. Also, pay attention to the recommendations of boat owners and locals.

A hidden gem is a wreck in the Listafjorden near Lista Fyr at a depth of 67 meters, where sizable ling, sometimes large cod, and good-sized pollack can be found.

At and around Pollackberg in Listafjorden, at a depth of 70 meters, hard-fighting sea fish, especially pollack, are regularly caught, as our pictures clearly demonstrate. Directly south of the lighthouse, at depths of 45 to 80 meters, ling, pollack, and good-sized cod also congregate along the drop-offs.

Fishing in Eidsfjord, near Cape Varnes and Stolsfjorden:

The fishing area lies directly in front of Eidsfjorden with its two small skerries in the middle of the fjord. Here, there are excellent spots for pollack, cod, and saithe. The sandy bottom promises good catches of cod, ling, and flatfish. Fishing in the fjord is possible daily. We have often fished in Eidsfjorden and Stolsfjorden, including at the fjord entrances along the verdant cliffs with their terraced drop-offs and great depths, in the opposite Stolsfjorden, and towards Cape Varnes with its well-known pollack spots. At Cape Varnes, please fish at a safe distance from the steep banks. Pollack are plentiful there among the underwater vegetation in shallow water. Do not enter the small bays and harbors; beware of shallows.

In Eidsfjorden itself, you can always find cod, saithe, pollack, ling, mackerel in the summer, and occasionally salmon and sea trout while trolling. Flounder and plaice prefer sandy bottoms. This alternative is a good option when there is a northwest wind and you cannot go out fishing. With an east wind, fishing trips are almost always possible. Please bear in mind that you are fishing here in the fjord, just before the open sea, probably the best fishing area in southern Norway with a great diversity of species and amazing fish sizes. Therefore, your trips should be well-planned and considered.

Please check the wind and wave height several times a day on Windguru and yr.no. Eidsfjorden (link click).

Fishing in freshwater/in the surrounding lakes and streams:

There are many beautiful fishing spots in the area – for trout, char, and sea trout. On the website Listerfriluft.no you will find an overview of the fishing lakes and sea trout spots. A permit is required for some freshwater lakes and is subject to a fee. Here you can find all the information about freshwater fishing spots in Southern Norway. (Click here)

Leisure - Tips, Activities - Attractions

We recommend evening visits to the restaurants and pubs in Flekkefjord, such as the Grand Hotel or the Maritim Hotel, which offer excellent cuisine. Live music and dance events often take place on weekends, which are also accessible by boat during the day. These trips are prohibited after dark. In the shopping centers, you will find everything you need for a shopping spree. In the harbor of Flekkefjord, there is a boat fuel station called "Groennes Marina" for marine diesel and gasoline. There is also a general store and a new boat fuel station in Abelnes, on Andabeløy. Only card payments with Visa or Mastercard and PIN are accepted here. Within the town limits, additional petrol stations and ATMs are easy to find.

The "white" town of Flekkefjord offers a diverse pedestrian zone with numerous shops, restaurants, pubs, dance bars, and other attractions. There are always events and performances, from open-air concerts to other happenings. The local diving club can organize diving trips for you by prior arrangement with the board. At the Flekkefjord harbor entrance, you'll find the historic Grönnes fortress and the only fjord beach with a diving platform. In summer, a boat trip to the popular swimming and barbecue island of Torsoy, located opposite Fjellsa, is highly recommended. If you have any questions about fishing, we will be happy to answer them. Under this link (click here) you will find a variety of activities in the Flekkefjord area, including Hollenderbyen (the Dutch town), rail biking on the legendary Flekkefjord railway, the Brufjell caves, the Blue Mountains caves, the Flekkefjord Museum, the Flekkefjord Diving Club, and Grønnes Beach.
